Have You Tried The ABC Countdown to Summer?

Wednesday May 10, 2006
We're all looking forward to summer vacation. But before I can hit the beach, I look forward to a sequence of fun activities that I do with my students each year. At my school, we call it the ABC Countdown to Summer and I want to tell you how it works. I even give you a sample program of activities that will keep you and your students excited about coming to school each day.

(1) Kim Scott says:

I teach fifth grade. We used to do an ABC countdown, but 26 letters proved to be too difficult to meet Illinois teaching standards. So, we initiated a Sixth Grade countdown. Using the letters in ’sixth grade’, my team created daily events for our students to look forward to the next school year. For example: S-day = Send a letter to your sixth grade teacher. This writing sample would provide teachers with students’ likes, dislikes, expectations and apprehensions. This activitity meets the standard of writing for a variety of purposes – a friendly letter. We’re all legal now!
