Standardized Test Pressure Buildup

Friday March 21, 2008
If you're in education in the 21st Century, I'm willing to bet you feel the pressure of standardized test scores, no matter where you teach in the United States. The pressure seems to come from all sides.

How do you feel about standardized tests and the pressure that comes along with them? Are you feeling the strain right now?

Yes! WE are feeling great pressure. We go to school until the end of May, yet we have our state testing the first week of April. We have 8 more weeks of curriculum to teach, yet the students will be tested on material not yet taught. Instead, we all feel we need to “cram” in 8 wks of learning…just so they have at least seen some of the material for the test. After the test, we will go back and do a better job of instruction. We should not test until the late May…state says it is so they can have scores back before beginning new school year. I say…take the test in late May and have the scores back- should not be so hard! Teaching to the test takes all the fun out of teaching. Pressure for schools to excel equals pressure for all.
