Classroom Rights

Friday March 28, 2008
If you're looking for an easy way to sum up the respectful tone you expect in your classroom, this Classroom "Bill of Rights" fits the bill, so to speak.

The wording can be posted in a prominent place in your classroom to serve as a touchstone and reminder of your ideal classroom atmosphere.

Beyond your “Rights,” I had three R’s besides the “Reading, Writing and ‘Rithmetic”. They were “Respect for each and every person in the classroom; Each person has the Right to learn or teach; and Each person has a Responsibility to do their best.

I am now a retired teacher who still substitute teaches. I post those 3 R’s underneath my name when I introduce myself. I add a fourth “R” which is even more important for each day I am with a class….that is Reality!

Parents in my classroom loved these concepts which are so important in the preservation of our democratic society.
