Free Rewards in the Classroom

Tuesday August 26, 2008
Do you give out stickers and plastic trinkets to recognize good behavior in your classroom? I try to avoid doling out material rewards to my students because I prefer offering creative, no-cost rewards instead.

Over the years, I've compiled a list of Free Classroom Rewards to motivate and reward good behavior choices. My students' favorite no-cost reward is Lunch Bunch where they get to stay in the classroom with me at lunchtime and chat casually while we each lunch together. It's simple, but it works. My students will do almost anything to get included in the monthly Lunch Bunch.

What is your favorite no-cost reward for elementary school students?

I’m sure it’s the same students having lunch with you all the time and the kids that are always behaving.

I do agree that sentimental rewards are good. A teacher I kno lets her kids bring in thier gameboys to play for about 15-20 min. Friday if they complete all their assigned work. It works out great.

Latasha needs to learn how to spell or use spell check.

I like the lunch bunch idea — kids love to talk!
An award certificate now and then can also be very motivating, especially for the little ones.
