How to Run a Green Classroom
Tuesday October 14, 2008
Everyday, I model for my students how to minimize the amount of waste I contribute to the environment. Whether it's through my reusable water bottle or consistent recycling, I am subconsciously teaching them how to be a responsible consumer in the modern world.
As the leader in your classroom, consider these Tips for How to Run a Green Classroom and show your students how to be green every day.
Did I miss any good green tips? How do you show your environmentally conscious side in the classroom?

This is an excellent idea. Some children can be so wasteful, and they don’t even realize it. Bringing recycling to their attention can help them to make a conscious effort to help the environment, and maybe even some of what they learn will spill over in to their home life. Have you ever thought of taking your class on a field trip to the local recycling center? Many times they offer special rates where you can get in free if you bring a bag of cans to recycle. This could be a fun educational experience for them to see what actually happens with the things they recycle.
My school is becoming a “Green School.” The school must complete certain criteria in order to achieve this accomplishment. My third grade class in particular is adopting an endangered animal through the local zoo. The students will raise money for this cause.
This also ties into the third grade science curriculum where we study animals, animal habitats, ecosystems, and food chains. The students are very excited to help the school become a “Green School.”
I always try to be a good example to my students and show them how to recycle. My school is also working on becoming a “green school”. In our classrooms we can recycle a lot of things. In my room I have 3 recycling bins one for paper, one for plastic and metal, and one for plastic baggies. My students are really into it. Soon we are going to start recycling in our cafeteria. I think it is great to get kids starting to think about the enviroment early on.
I have also taken a class to our county recycling center. It is a great field trip and ours was free. Since people want to get the word out about recycling, they really try to make it easy. I highly recommend taking the trip. My class loved it and learned a lot!
This is a great idea! This can help teach children how to be responsible, and clean up after themselves. As a teacher, we should set good examples to help better the enviroment. Many children look up to their teachers, so if the teachers are doing it the students will too. You should have recycling bins available at all times and use them everyday. Children will become more responsible and clean up their mess.
