Thanksgiving Writing Lessons
Thursday November 13, 2008
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love how it's family-oriented, food-centric, and heavy on the gratitude for our individual and collective blessings. That's my kind of holiday!
So it comes naturally to me to bring my Thanksgiving enthusiasm into the classroom. My top way to spread the November cheer is through a variety of Thanksgiving writing activities:
- Thanksgiving Acrostic Poem Lesson
- Thanksgiving Writing Prompts
- A Thanksgiving Word Bank (to complement all of my students' November writing opportunities)

I love doing activities in the classroom that incorporate the holidays. It is a nice change for the students. In addition, the holidays always present a wide variety of writing opportunities. Another Thanksgiving lesson I have done is a simple nouns and verbs lesson. Have the students trace their hands on to a sheet of white paper (You can use paint if you are feeling a little more adventurous). Then have the students decorate their hand drawings as if they were turkeys. The thumb becomes the head, and the other fingers become the feathers. After they are done decorating have the students label one turkey “nouns” and one turkey “verbs”. After the turkeys are labeled the students can then put different nouns and verbs associated with Thanksgiving on the feathers of the appropriate turkey. This is a fun activity, and it can also double as an art assignment.
