DESCRIBING A PICTURE
Submitted by Carey

Have available a picture of a person, or people in any activity (reading, playing, sitting, etc.) Most pictures I use are from old calendars, magazines, posters, etc.

Have students write what they think the person or people in the pictures are thinking and why. What do they think the person or people are doing and why. Give the students freedom of choosing and writing whatever they feel regarding the pictures.

This gives the students opportunities to share their creativity, grammar and general language tools, handwriting practice and spelling tools.

Many of my students have really become creative and have written many things that I have never thought of myself. Providing time for students to share their writings really seems to open up possibilities to other students.

The more I have done this activity the more creative and longer the writings have gotten!
