Blotter Bugs

Kindergarten students will learn that by mixing two primary colors they make the secondary colors.
A terrific art lesson plan by: Maryanne Messier - Washington Elementary School, Janesville WI

Materials:

  • Tempera Paint (Red, Yellow, Blue)
  • Newspapers
  • 5'x5' White construction paper
  • 12'x 18' Colored construction paper
  • Paint Shirt
  • Blotter Bug Handout
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Black Markers
  • Crayons

Directions DAY 1:

  1. Review the Primary Colors
  2. Talk about how by mixing colors you can get other colors
  3. Have students get their supplies
  4. Hand out white paper; have students choose two colors that they want
  5. Have students put two drops of each color they chose on the white square paper
  6. Students then fold the white paper in half and rub the paint around
  7. Open the paper to discover what colors they made.
  8. Repeat with other colors and allow to dry overnight

Directions DAY 2:

  1. Have students cut out the shapes that were created by the paint mixing.
  2. Then have them glue all three bugs on a large sheet of colored construction paper
  3. Then have the students fill in the "Blotter Bug" page with crayons (available upon request)
  4. Once the "blotter bug" handout has been done the students may then begin to decorate their bugs with black markers to look like bugs.

  • At the end of the lesson the students will have a completed picture and will know how primary colors make secondary colors. They will also remember what primaries make secondaries.
