Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day

Dateline: 2/1/00

Happy Hearts Day!

Ever year, birth defects of the heart afflict millions of newborn infants and children. As elementary educators, we will surely encounter these children in our classrooms, perhaps without even knowing it. Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day falls on another day of hearts, Valentine's Day, February 14th, 2000. Through this international event, organizers hope to raise awareness of this chronic and costly problem.

What can we do as educators to support their cause?

  • Learn more about Congenital Heart Defects in children, through organizations like the Children's Health Information Network.
  • Refer parents and families in your school community to support groups, as needed.
  • Read about how to help children with pain and discomfort resulting from their Congenital Heart Defects.
  • Ask questions if you have them. About.com's Heart Disease/ Cardiology Guide, S. Sivasubramanian, would be more than happy to help you or point you to the resources you seek.
  • Visit the CHD Awareness Day Event right here at About.com. Guides all across the network have teamed up to bring you in-depth coverage of this issue.

As elementary school teachers, we are often more than just educators. We serve as caregivers, friends, guidance counselors, nurses, temporary parents, and more. Whether we ask for these extra responsibilties or not, we owe it to our students to be knowledgeable of their whole selves- mental, spiritual, and physical. The observance of Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day is just one step we can take in that direction.
