Objective:
After reading the book Postcards from Pluto, students will be able to complete their own postcards from space, demonstrating their comprehension of the science material. (Cognitive Objective)
Anticipatory Set (approx. 5 minutes):
Ask the students to offer any information that they already know about Pluto.
Review the My Very Eager Mother
saying for remembering the order of the planets, pointing out that Pluto is the last of the planets in our solar system.
Direct Instruction (approx. 10-15 minutes):
Preview the book with the students by looking at the cover and engaging in preliminary instruction.
Read the book to the students, stopping every so often to comment on interesting facts.
Guided Practice (approx. 10 minutes):
Review the Postcards from Pluto that received from the students in Room 13. Tell the students that we will be writing the students back in the same format.
Go over the format of postcards, how to address, what to include, etc.
Closure (approx. 5 minutes):
Suggest and accept suggestions for what the students can include in their postcards.
Independent Practice:
Assign the students the comprehension activity of writing postcards to the students of Room 13, using proper formatting and accurate information.
Help the students edit their postcards for spelling, punctuations, accuracy, etc. before sending.
